Modern Wine Cellar Under the Stairs

Modern Wine Cellar Under the Stairs

Arctic Metalworks built a modern wine cellar under the stairs of a home in Canyon Lake, California. As a member of Wine Cellar Designers Group, they always aim to provide exceptional service and high-quality products. No problems can hinder them from exceeding their client’s expectations. In this project, they created a wine room with metal wine racks and unique features.

California Modern Wine Cellar Built Under the Stairs

Arctic Metalworks completed a project in Canyon Lake, a gated community in California. Most people, especially those in their 30’s to 60’s, love to socialize, host wine-tasting parties, and collect wine. It is home to multi-level homes and wine enthusiasts.

Arctic Metalworks, one of the members of the Wine Cellar Designers Group, was contacted by a client who needed help transforming a space under their stairs into a functional wine storage space. The turnaround time was 60 days, including the waiting time for the wine racks and door.

Wine Cellar Construction: How the Arctic Team Dealt with the Challenges

Wine Room Insulation is a Crucial Step in Building Modern Wine Cellars

Wine Cellar Insulation was installed in this Modern Wine Cellar in California

Arctic Metalworks had to deal with structural challenges in this project. The room is located in a walk-in closet on the ground floor of the house, near the master bedroom. In addition to limited space, the room and door were skewed. It could be because the previous contractor of the homeowners rushed with the construction of the room or because the foundation was settling on a sandy bank.  Another challenge was the crack on the flooring, so they had to remove it before installing the tiles.

The Arctic team had to ensure that all of the requirements and needs of the client were provided despite the challenges they encountered during the construction process. They made sure that all the components were made of high-quality materials and installed correctly.

Wine Room Insulation: A Crucial Aspect in Building Wine Cellars

Building refrigerated wine rooms requires technical skills and knowledge. Arctic Metalworks is composed of HVAC specialists who understand the crucial role of insulation in preserving the quality of the wine.

Wine room insulation must be done before installing the wine racks, door, cooling unit, and flooring. A poor or lack of insulation and the absence of a vapor barrier can cause costly damages. If you do not want to waste your investment, hiring a reliable builder is a brilliant idea.

Arctic Metalworks always finds innovative wine storage solutions without breaking the bank. In this modern wine cellar built under the stairs, they installed closed-cell spray foam insulation. We recommend this type of wine room insulation because it is proven efficient.

It can fill in even the tiniest gaps in the walls. Moreover, it can also act as both an insulator and a vapor barrier, so you do not have to spend extra on a separate vapor barrier. Conventional insulation will require a minimum of 4-mil plastic sheeting.

Correct insulation will prevent condensation build-up by preventing the warm air from entering the wine cellar. It will also strengthen the structural integrity of your wine room. The vapor barrier is typically installed between the insulation and the foundation wall. It separates the wine cellar environment from the outside. It also helps regulate the conditions inside your wine room and prevents moisture build-up and mold growth.

Another advantage of correct installation of insulation and vapor barrier is that it prevents the wine cooling system from working too hard to achieve the optimum wine storage conditions. When this happens, your wine refrigeration unit might break down.

Before installing the insulation, Arctic Metalworks made a careful assessment to determine the R-value needed for the modern wine cellar in California. This process will ensure that there will be no air leakage and mold growth.

Modern Metal Wine Racks from Vintage Cellars: Attractive and Space-Savvy

The goals of the Arctic team include creating a visually appealing wine display and maximizing the storage capacity of the wine room. In this modern wine cellar, they installed metal wine racks on the left, right, and back walls. These wine racks were supplied by VintageView, a top-notch manufacturer of modern wine storage systems. The wine racks were mounted on the wall to eliminate the use of floor space.

The bottles are displayed with the labels facing out to provide convenience in browsing. One side of the wall consists of a stand-alone half-height metal wine rack. It has a display row that holds the bottles at an angle. A horizontal display storage was added at the bottom section of the racking.

Wine Cellar Door

Arctic Metalworks installed a Coto-style door, which has an arched top. It is made of a wooden frame, black wrought iron grill, and a glass panel. There is a hand-carved grapevine design on the wood at the center of the door.

The door was provided by IronWine Cellars, known for its exterior-grade doors. The wood and metal components are durable and resistant to highly humid conditions in refrigerated wine rooms. The glass is dual-paned and thermally insulated. They also left a thin space in between the glass panels and filled it with a special type of gas to help prevent moisture and condensation build-up.

The Arctic team created an airtight seal by installing weather stripping on the door. It seals all the gaps around the door, preventing air leakage to and from the modern wine cellar in California.
