Contemporary Wine Cellar Built Under a Small Space Under the Stairs of a Condominium Unit

Wine rooms can be built almost anywhere in one’s home. When you work with a professional builder, you can be sure that you will have a hassle-free experience throughout the process, regardless of the size of your space.

Space constraints did not hinder the owners of a condominium unit from creating a safe and beautiful wine storage facility for their collection. For an experienced manufacturer like Wine Cellar Specialists, any sized room can be converted into an elegant wine cellar. In this project, the team was hired to create a design for a tiny space under the staircase. The stairs have steel beams and steps made from bamboo. They utilized metal wine racks, which resulted in an exceptional wine display and storage for 222 bottles!

Creating a 3-Dimensional Design for a Contemporary Wine Cellar

One of the crucial processes in wine cellar construction is designing the wine room. The CAD images help provide better visualization of the completed wine cellar. These include the dimensions of the room, racking styles, bottle capacities, and door placement.

Ideally, the free 3-dimensional drawings are in black and white. In this contemporary wine cellar project, Wine Cellar Specialists provided colored drawings for a small fee in addition to the black and white images. They provided the owners with three-color options for the wall and back panels.

Considering the existing staircase made with steel beams, they decided to go for gray walls, Alumasteel backer boards, and brushed aluminum. The drawings show single-deep racking, but later on, the client decided to choose double-deep wine racks.

Metal Wine Racks Perfect for the Contemporary Wine Cellar

Wine Cellar Specialists always considers visual appeal and functionality when designing custom wine cellars. They want to maximize the storage capacity of small spaces. Choosing the right wine storage system for your wine room is quite challenging without the help of an expert. Many factors should be taken into account to come up with a racking design that suits the specific needs of each client.

Dealing with space constraints will not hinder Wine Cellar Specialists from building their client’s dream wine cellars. Metal wine racks are recommended for building modern wine rooms in small spaces. They offer design and installation flexibility, in addition to adding a luxurious touch to your home.

In this contemporary wine cellar, the initial plan was to install single-deep metal wine racks but went with double-deep racking, thus, increasing the bottle capacity of the wine room.

The wine rack design for odd-shaped spaces like under the staircase should be well thought out. In this project, Wine cellar Specialists utilized metal wine pegs from Ultra Wine Racks and Cellars, a manufacturer of modern peg wine racks known for their durable components and functional features.

The wine pegs are lightweight and engineered to hold the bottles securely in place. Each peg has rubber O-rings to prevent the bottles from slipping and falling to the ground. Two pegs can hold two bottles horizontally. The labels are facing out, allowing the owners to locate a specific bottle of wine with ease. The backer boards were pre-drilled before the assembly and installation of the peg wine racks on site.

Wine Cellar Cooling System

The wine refrigeration system is another component of a wine cellar that plays a vital role in achieving the ideal wine storage conditions. In this wine cellar project, Wine Cellar Specialists encountered some challenges in wine cooling installation. They had to choose a wine cooling system that would not require patching up or cutting the ceiling, so they created a soffit on the lower level, allowing them to run duct lines for the compressor located in the courtyard. They place the evaporator vertically between the studs of the left wall. They built out the wall before adding 3-inch foam insulation.

Another challenge in this contemporary wine cellar under the stairs was the irregular height of the drain line. To solve the problem, the team installed a condensate pump within the cooling unit. The climate-control system supplied by US Cellar Systems was the WM6600 model. It is a large single wall-mount unit, ideal for small glass wine cellars. Wine Cellar Specialists applied a powder coating to complement the steel beams of the staircase and the color of the wall paint.

Glass Elements of the Contemporary Wine Cellar

The best way to achieve a contemporary look is by combining metal and glass elements. Wine displays with metal wine racks go well with glass. The owners wanted their wine room to have lots of glass. Wine Cellar Specialists utilized glass in the front wall, door, ceiling, and end wall.

For the ceiling, they used frosted glass. The glass door and walls allow the client’s collection to be viewed outside.
